Interstitial condensation
Wrong board, wrong vapour control, or no detailing at openings traps moisture inside the build-up. Result: hidden rot, mould, and structural damage years later.

Service overview
External wall insulation (EWI) wraps your home in 60–150mm of insulation board, finished with a full render system. Heating bills drop 20–35%, draughts disappear, internal walls warm up — and you get a brand-new render finish at the same time. For solid-wall homes built before 1930, EWI is the single biggest energy upgrade available.
EWI is a system: insulation boards (EPS or mineral wool) mechanically and adhesively fixed to the external wall, covered with a polymer base coat and reinforcing mesh, then finished with a silicone or acrylic topcoat in any colour.
Solid-wall homeowners with cold internal walls, landlords meeting MEES regulations, eligible households accessing ECO4 and similar funding, and self-builders specifying high-performance external wraps.
Where existing render is failing AND heating bills are high — EWI delivers both fixes at once. Also when modernising a tired exterior and you'd benefit from the thermal upgrade.
EWI is an engineered system. Get the fixings wrong, the bead detailing wrong, or the substrate prep wrong and you create a thermal-bridge problem worse than no insulation. Manufacturer-trained installers deliver the warranty.
The cost of getting it wrong
EWI failures are catastrophic — and almost always caused by cutting corners on system specification.
Wrong board, wrong vapour control, or no detailing at openings traps moisture inside the build-up. Result: hidden rot, mould, and structural damage years later.
Window and door reveals must be insulated and detailed properly. Skip it and you get cold spots, condensation and mould on internal reveals.
Wrong fixing pattern or wrong fixing for substrate causes boards to detach years later — taking the render with them.
BBA-certified systems only carry warranty when installed by registered installers using the full system. Mixed-and-matched parts = no cover.
Our process
Same process on every job — domestic, commercial, single-room or full house.
We assess wall construction, U-value, internal moisture, exposure rating, and recommend the right system depth and finish.
Where eligible we'll flag ECO4 and other regional funding routes. You receive a detailed written quote and timeline.
Scaffold up, substrate cleaned, defective brickwork repaired, openings prepared for reveal detailing.
Insulation boards fixed adhesively and mechanically per system spec; base coat applied with full alkali-resistant mesh embedment.
Topcoat applied wet-on-wet across full elevations; system registered with manufacturer for full warranty.
Why MCB
Independent assessments consistently show heating-cost reductions in this range for solid-wall homes after EWI.
Internal surface temperature rises by 4–7°C — eliminating cold spots and condensation/mould issues.
All work is external. You keep your skirting boards, plug sockets, radiators and internal decoration.
You get a premium silicone render facade as part of the same package.
Full manufacturer warranty when installed by registered specialists — backed by our workmanship guarantee.
EPC rating improves; resale value rises; rental properties move into compliance.
In depth
EWI is an engineered system with multiple layers, each doing a specific job. Here's how a correctly specified installation is built up.
The substrate has to be sound, clean and stable. Pebble dash, loose paint, damp brickwork — all of it has to be addressed before any insulation goes on. We tap-test the existing wall, repair where needed, and document substrate condition before quoting.
Insulation boards (typically 90–150mm EPS or 90–120mm mineral wool) are fixed with both adhesive and mechanical fixings — typically 6 fixings per board, in a pattern set by the system manufacturer. Mineral wool is heavier and more fire-resistant; EPS is cheaper and easier to detail. Spec depends on building height, fire-strategy and budget.
Reveal detailing is where most installers cut corners and where most failures originate. Window and door reveals must be wrapped in insulation, mesh and beads to maintain thermal continuity. We use system-matched reveal beads and detail every opening to manufacturer specification.
The base coat is applied at 6–8mm with full alkali-resistant mesh embedment, including additional 45° corner-reinforcement mesh at every opening. The silicone topcoat goes on wet-on-wet across whole elevations, in any RAL or system colour. The job is then registered with the manufacturer for the full 25-year warranty.
Typical 3-bed semi is 3–5 weeks on site including scaffold and weather windows.
Commercial EWI is programme-led with phased scaffold, traffic management, and main-contractor coordination.
